Most sign descriptions are written to flatter. This one is written to be useful: what each sign is actually built to do, where it tends to overdo it, and how to tell it apart from its neighbors.
One thing first. A sign isn't a person. It's a style. Your Sun is in one sign, your Moon in another, your rising sign is a third, and Venus and Mars have their own. So read this as a vocabulary for the whole chart, not a label for you.
How the signs are organized
Every sign is a combination of an element and a mode.
Elements (what the sign runs on): fire (action, will), earth (matter, results), air (ideas, connection), water (feeling, memory).
Modes (how it moves): cardinal (starts things), fixed (sustains things), mutable (adapts things).
Cross them and you get 12 unique combinations. Aries is cardinal fire: starts with force. Taurus is fixed earth: holds what's built. Gemini is mutable air: keeps ideas moving. Once you know a sign's element and mode, you can often reconstruct its personality without memorizing anything.
The 12 signs
Aries (cardinal fire, ruled by TMars)
Built to start. Direct, quick, competitive, honest to a fault. Aries wants to be first, and it wants the fight to be fair. Overdoes it as impatience and a short fuse. Under-appreciated strength: Aries forgives fast, because holding a grudge takes too long.
Taurus (fixed earth, ruled by RVenus)
Built to hold. Patient, sensual, loyal, slow to start and slower to stop. Taurus wants things to be solid: money, home, the same restaurant every Friday. Overdoes it as stubbornness and resistance to change even when change is obviously needed. Strength: nothing rattles a Taurus that has decided.
Gemini (mutable air, ruled by EMercury)
Built to connect. Curious, verbal, fast, interested in everything for a while. Gemini wants to know, and then wants to tell someone. Overdoes it as scattering and a reputation for two faces (it's usually two interests, not two loyalties). Strength: Gemini can explain anything to anyone.
Cancer (cardinal water, ruled by the WMoon)
Built to protect. Nurturing, intuitive, guarded, with a long memory. Cancer wants safety, for itself and for whoever it has claimed. Overdoes it as moodiness and the shell: retreating when hurt instead of saying so. Strength: when a Cancer is on your side, you have a home.
Leo (fixed fire, ruled by the QSun)
Built to shine. Warm, generous, proud, loyal, creative. Leo wants to be seen and to make the people around it feel seen too. Overdoes it as needing the spotlight and taking things personally. Strength: Leo's warmth is real. It isn't performing; it just performs well.
Virgo (mutable earth, ruled by EMercury)
Built to refine. Precise, helpful, analytical, hard on itself. Virgo wants things to work properly and will quietly fix them until they do. Overdoes it as criticism, of others and especially of itself. Strength: Virgo notices what everyone else missed.
Libra (cardinal air, ruled by RVenus)
Built to balance. Diplomatic, aesthetic, fair-minded, relationship-focused. Libra wants harmony and a good pair to work with. Overdoes it as indecision and people-pleasing. Strength: Libra can see both sides and actually mean it.
Scorpio (fixed water, ruled by TMars traditionally, PPluto in modern use)
Built to go deep. Intense, private, loyal, perceptive, all-or-nothing. Scorpio wants truth, especially the kind people hide. Overdoes it as control, jealousy, and a long memory for betrayal. Strength: a Scorpio will stay in the hard conversation everyone else leaves.
Sagittarius (mutable fire, ruled by YJupiter)
Built to explore. Optimistic, blunt, restless, philosophical. Sagittarius wants meaning and room. Overdoes it as tactlessness and over-promising. Strength: Sagittarius makes the future feel bigger than the present.
Capricorn (cardinal earth, ruled by USaturn)
Built to achieve. Disciplined, dry, ambitious, responsible early. Capricorn wants to build something that lasts and be respected for it. Overdoes it as workaholism and a hard time letting anyone help. Strength: Capricorn gets better with age, and knows it.
Aquarius (fixed air, ruled by USaturn traditionally, IUranus in modern use)
Built to reform. Independent, humane, original, a little detached. Aquarius wants a better system and the freedom to be strange. Overdoes it as aloofness and contrarianism for its own sake. Strength: Aquarius sees the pattern before the pattern is obvious.
Pisces (mutable water, ruled by YJupiter traditionally, ONeptune in modern use)
Built to dissolve boundaries. Compassionate, imaginative, sensitive, porous. Pisces wants to feel connected to something larger. Overdoes it as escapism and losing itself in other people. Strength: Pisces feels what the room feels, and can turn that into art or care.
Signs that get confused with each other
Aries vs Leo vs Sagittarius (the fire signs): Aries fights, Leo performs, Sagittarius leaves. All three are warm and direct; the difference is whether the energy goes to winning, being seen, or getting away.
Taurus vs Virgo vs Capricorn (earth): Taurus keeps, Virgo fixes, Capricorn climbs. Taurus is comfortable, Virgo is useful, Capricorn is ambitious.
Gemini vs Libra vs Aquarius (air): Gemini talks, Libra relates, Aquarius theorizes. Gemini wants information, Libra wants a partner, Aquarius wants a principle.
Cancer vs Scorpio vs Pisces (water): Cancer protects, Scorpio probes, Pisces absorbs. Cancer's shell, Scorpio's control, Pisces's escape are the same instinct (self-protection) with three different tactics.
Scorpio vs Capricorn: both private, both serious, both long-game. Scorpio is private about feelings; Capricorn is private about weakness.
Virgo vs Gemini: both Mercury-ruled, both quick-minded. Gemini wants to know more things; Virgo wants to know things better.
Where each sign sits in your chart
Every sign is somewhere in your chart, whether or not a planet is in it. Each one rules one of your 12 houses, and that's where its style shows up in your life even with no planet present.

- The sign your Moon is in: your needs and reflexes.
- Your rising sign: how you come across.
- The signs of Venus and Mars: how you love and how you act.
- Any sign holding three or more planets (a stellium): it dominates.
