Signs describe style. Houses describe place. Planets are the actors: the parts of you that actually do things. A chart with no planets in it is just an empty stage.
Astrology uses ten: the Sun and Moon (called planets for convenience, "lights" in older texts), the five visible planets known since antiquity, and the three outer planets found by telescope. This guide covers what each one is responsible for, how fast it moves (which tells you whether it's personal or generational), and what to look for first in your own chart.
Personal, social, and outer planets
Speed decides how personal a planet is.
Personal planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars) move fast enough that their sign changes within weeks or days. Everyone born in the same month can have different placements. These describe you as an individual.
Social planets (Jupiter, Saturn) take one and two-and-a-half years per sign. They describe how you meet the world: growth, limits, responsibility.
Outer planets (Uranus, Neptune, Pluto) take 7 to 30 years per sign. Everyone your age shares them. They describe your generation, and they only become personal when they sit on an angle or aspect a personal planet closely.
The QSun
Runs: identity, vitality, purpose, the ego in the neutral sense of "the one who decides." Cycle: one sign a month, the whole zodiac in a year. In your chart: the Sun's sign is what you're becoming. Its house is where you need to shine to feel alive. A 10th-house Sun needs visible achievement; a 4th-house Sun needs a home that's truly theirs. Overdoes it as: pride, needing to be the center.
The WMoon
Runs: emotions, needs, habits, memory, the body's rhythms, the mother or early caretaker. Cycle: 2.5 days per sign, the zodiac in 27 days. In your chart: the sign is your emotional reflex; the house is where you go for comfort. The Moon is the fastest thing in the chart, so it's the first to be wrong if the birth time is off. Overdoes it as: moodiness, clinging to the familiar.
EMercury
Runs: thinking, speaking, writing, learning, short trips, the nervous system, how you process information. Cycle: roughly 3 weeks per sign, but with three retrograde periods a year, so it's never far from the Sun (28 degrees at most). In your chart: Mercury's sign is how you think and talk. Mercury in Gemini is fast and associative; in Capricorn, structured and slow to speak. Its house is what you think about most. Overdoes it as: overthinking, talking instead of feeling.
RVenus
Runs: love, attraction, pleasure, beauty, money, what you value, how you relate. Cycle: about a month per sign, retrograde every 18 months, never more than 48 degrees from the Sun. In your chart: Venus's sign is how you love and what you find beautiful. Its house is where you look for pleasure and partnership. Venus in the 7th wants a partner; Venus in the 2nd wants nice things and security. Overdoes it as: indulgence, keeping the peace at any cost.
TMars
Runs: drive, anger, desire, courage, how you go after what you want and how you fight. Cycle: about 6 weeks per sign, retrograde every two years. In your chart: Mars's sign is your fighting style. Mars in Aries charges; Mars in Libra negotiates first; Mars in Cancer defends. Its house is where you spend energy and where conflict shows up. Overdoes it as: aggression, impatience, burning out.
YJupiter
Runs: growth, luck, faith, expansion, generosity, the big picture, teaching and learning at the level of meaning. Cycle: one year per sign, 12 years around. In your chart: Jupiter's house is where things come easily and where you tend to overdo it. Jupiter in the 2nd: money comes, and goes. Jupiter in the 9th: travel, education, a natural teacher. Overdoes it as: excess, overconfidence, promising more than you deliver.
USaturn
Runs: limits, structure, time, discipline, responsibility, fear, the things you build slowly and keep. Cycle: 2.5 years per sign, 29.5 years around. The Saturn return at 29 and 58 is a well-known life marker. In your chart: Saturn's house is where you feel inadequate early and become an authority late. Saturn in the 7th: relationships come slow and serious. Saturn in the 10th: career is a long climb with a real summit. Overdoes it as: rigidity, pessimism, working when you should rest.
IUranus
Runs: change, freedom, disruption, invention, the part of you that refuses to be told. Cycle: 7 years per sign, 84 years around. In your chart: Uranus's house is where your life doesn't follow the script. Uranus in the 4th: unusual family, many moves. Uranus in the 10th: a career nobody predicted. It's personal only when it aspects a personal planet or sits on an angle. Overdoes it as: instability, rebellion without a cause.
ONeptune
Runs: imagination, compassion, dreams, spirituality, illusion, the dissolving of boundaries. Cycle: 14 years per sign, 165 years around. In your chart: Neptune's house is where you idealize and where you can be fooled. Neptune in the 7th: falling for the fantasy of a partner. Neptune in the 12th: a rich inner life, a need for solitude. Overdoes it as: escapism, confusion, self-deception.
PPluto
Runs: power, transformation, obsession, death and rebirth in the psychological sense, what you can't leave alone. Cycle: 12 to 30 years per sign (its orbit is uneven), 248 years around. In your chart: Pluto's house is where you go through something hard and come out changed. Pluto in the 1st: an intense presence. Pluto in the 8th: deep involvement with other people's resources, crisis, and recovery. Overdoes it as: control, secrecy, scorched earth.
Which planets matter most in your chart
Not all ten carry the same weight in a given chart. In rough order of what to read first:
- The Sun, Moon, and the ruler of your rising sign. These three are the core.
- Any planet sitting on an angle (near the Ascendant, Midheaven, Descendant, or IC). Angular planets are loud regardless of what they are.
- Any planet with many tight aspects. A planet that connects to five others is a hub.
- Venus and Mars if the question is about relationships; Mercury if it's about work and communication; Saturn if it's about long-term direction.
- Outer planets only where they touch something personal.
