Modern readings are gentler, but the gradient still helps. A conjunction at 1 degree or less tends to be more self-absorbed or more focused than one at 7 degrees. Questions people ask
Why does almost everyone seem to have Sun conjunct Mercury?
Because Mercury orbits inside Earth's orbit and always appears close to the Sun. It can be at most about 28 degrees away, so a conjunction within 8 or 10 degrees is very common.
Does it matter if Mercury is retrograde in this conjunction?
It can. Mercury turns retrograde around its inferior conjunction, when it passes between Earth and the Sun. A retrograde Mercury conjunct the Sun often points to an inward-turning mind that rethinks before it speaks.
Is Sun conjunct Mercury the same as being intelligent?
No. It describes how your thinking connects to your identity, not how much of it there is. Intelligence shows across the whole chart.
