Steve Jobs is the chart to read if you want to see what hard aspects do. The soft version of astrology says squares and oppositions are "challenges." The grand cross: Mars, Uranus, Neptune, Venus
Four planets, two oppositions crossing each other, all in square: Mars at 29 Aries opposite Neptune at 28 Libra, and Uranus at 24 Cancer opposite Venus at 21 Capricorn. All four are in cardinal signs. A cardinal grand cross is the most restless configuration in astrology: four demands pulling in four directions, and no way to satisfy one without provoking another. People with this pattern don't relax. They build.
Take the four planets in turn:
- Mars in Aries (8th house): raw will, in its own sign, in the house of crisis, other people's money, and transformation. Drive that runs through confrontation and through the resources of investors, boards, and partners.
- Neptune in Libra (2nd house): vision, ideals, and illusion, in the house of money and values. Money as a vehicle for a vision; also the famous reality distortion field, which is Neptune opposing Mars: will bending perception.
- Uranus in Cancer (11th house): disruption and invention, in the house of groups, technology, and the future. The engineer's rebellion against how things are done, played out through teams and the industry.
- Venus in Capricorn (5th house): taste, beauty, and value, in earth, disciplined and serious, in the house of creativity. Design as a discipline. The obsession with the object being right.
Four T-squares are embedded in this cross, and each apex tells part of the story. The tightest is Mars-Neptune at 1 degree: the will that could make people believe things weren't possible were, and the same will that couldn't always tell the difference.
Pisces Sun in the 6th, Virgo rising: the aesthete who ran a factory
The Sun at 5 Pisces sits in the 6th house of work, craft, and daily labor. Virgo rises, so the chart ruler is Mercury, and Mercury sits in the 6th too, in Aquarius, retrograde. The Sun-Ascendant opposition (within 5 degrees) is the Pisces-Virgo axis lived out: the visionary and the perfectionist as one person, and often at war.
Pisces Sun: imagination, the sense that things could be beautiful and simple, an intuitive rather than analytical mind, a tendency to absorb and dissolve. Virgo rising: the front door is precise, critical, exacting, and the life goes into work. Together in the 6th house: someone whose vision was expressed through the manufacturing of objects, and whose famous perfectionism about the inside of a machine nobody would see was Virgo rising in charge of a Pisces dream.
Both Sun and chart ruler in the 6th is the same signature as in Beyoncรฉ's chart, in a very different key: the work is the identity.
Aries Moon in the 8th
The Moon at 7 Aries in the 8th house of crisis, intensity, shared resources, and the deep end. An Aries Moon needs action, independence, and a fight to feel alive; it reacts fast and forgets fast; it is not patient with feelings, its own or others'. In the 8th, the emotional life runs through intensity, power, and periodic destruction and rebuilding. Ousted from his own company, then brought back: that is an 8th-house Moon in a cardinal grand cross chart.
The Moon sextile the Midheaven (within a degree) ties the emotional life directly to the public role. The mood and the mission were the same thing, and the public saw both.
Mercury retrograde in Aquarius
Mercury at 14 Aquarius, retrograde, in the 6th, ruling the Virgo Ascendant. The chart ruler retrograde: thinking that runs inward first, unconventional, not by the book, arriving at conclusions others can't follow and then presenting them as obvious. Aquarius Mercury is the mind of the engineer and the futurist; retrograde, it's the mind that reconsiders everything until the answer is simple.
Mercury square Saturn (within 7 degrees) adds the harshness: precise, critical, and unforgiving in how it communicated, which is well documented.
Venus opposite Jupiter, sextile Saturn
Venus in Capricorn in the 5th is exactly sextile Saturn (0 degrees of orb, the tightest aspect in the chart) and opposite Jupiter in Cancer in the 11th (within a degree). Venus-Saturn exact: taste with discipline, beauty as restraint, the aesthetic of removing everything unnecessary. It is hard to find a better single aspect for the design philosophy that became the company's identity.
Venus opposite Jupiter is the counterweight: taste that wanted more, bigger, grander, in tension with the restraint. The 5th-11th axis puts this between personal creativity and the collective: what he wanted to make versus what the industry and the market wanted.
Saturn in Scorpio in the 3rd
Saturn at 21 Scorpio in the 3rd house of communication, learning, and immediate environment. Saturn in the 3rd is the placement of someone who left formal education early (he dropped out after one semester) and who was hard, deliberate, and intense in speech. Saturn trine Uranus (3 degrees) is the pairing that makes discipline and disruption cooperate: the structure that new things need in order to ship.
What the chart doesn't show
A grand cross doesn't produce Apple. It produces a person who can't sit still and who turns friction into output, and the specific output depends on everything else: a Pisces Sun's vision, a Venus-Saturn's taste, a Mercury retrograde's non-standard mind, an era, a garage, a partner. The chart shows the engine, not the destination.
What it does show, unmistakably, is that the smoothing-over version of astrology is wrong. This is a chart with almost no easy aspects among the personal planets, and it belongs to one of the most productive people of the century. The Splay shape (planets in irregular clusters, hard to categorize) fits a person no template described. Hard aspects are not bad luck. They're work, and this chart did the work.
