Transits are the sky moving over your chart. Progressions are your chart moving. The idea is old and strange and works better than it has any right to: each day after your birth stands for one year of your life. The sky on the 30th day after you were born describes your 30th year.

Day for a year
Take your birth date and add one day for every year of age. If you're 35, look at the sky 35 days after your birth. That's your progressed chart for age 35. It moves forward one day's worth of planetary motion every year.
The technique is called secondary progression to distinguish it from other symbolic timing methods (solar arc, primary directions). It's been in use since at least the seventeenth century and remains a standard tool in most Western practice.
Why it works is a matter of debate. That it works, in the sense of describing inner development on a timeline that people recognize, is a matter of long experience.
What moves and what doesn't
In a day, the Moon moves 12 to 15 degrees. The Sun moves one. Mercury, Venus, and Mars move a degree or so. Jupiter and beyond barely move at all.
So in a progressed chart:
- The progressed Moon changes sign every two and a half years and crosses the whole chart in 27 to 28 years. This is the active part.
- The progressed Sun moves one degree a year, changing sign every 30 years. A sign change is a major life shift.
- Progressed Mercury, Venus, Mars move slowly and occasionally change sign, go retrograde, or turn direct. These turning points matter.
- Progressed Jupiter through Pluto stay roughly where they were. Ignore them, except when a progressed personal planet aspects them.
- The progressed angles move about a degree a year and are worth watching when they change sign or aspect a planet.
The progressed Moon: your two-and-a-half-year mood
The progressed Moon is the piece of this technique that earns its keep. Its sign describes your emotional climate for about two and a half years: what you need, how you react, what kind of period you're in.
Progressed Moon in Capricorn: a period of getting serious, working, feeling the weight of responsibility, often a little lonely. Progressed Moon in Leo: warmer, more expressive, more need to be seen; often a creative or romantic stretch. Progressed Moon in Pisces: diffuse, tired, spiritual, sometimes confused. Progressed Moon in Aries: restless, ready to act, impatient with the previous two years' passivity.
People who track their progressed Moon usually recognize the shifts in hindsight: "yes, that's when I stopped caring about that and started caring about this."
The progressed Moon through the houses
The house tells you where the emotional focus is.
- 1st: a new emotional cycle; self-focus, often a change in appearance or health habits.
- 4th: home, family, roots; moving house, dealing with parents, wanting to nest.
- 7th: relationships come to the front; a new partnership or a reckoning with an existing one.
- 10th: career and public life carry the feeling; a visible period.
- 12th: withdrawal, rest, closure; the end of the 27-year cycle, often a tired and reflective time before the 1st-house restart.
The progressed Moon conjunct a natal planet is a month or two of that planet's theme coming to the surface. Progressed Moon on natal Venus: a romantic or pleasant stretch. On natal Saturn: a heavy one.
The progressed Sun changing sign
The progressed Sun moves one degree a year, so if you were born with the Sun at 25 degrees of a sign, it changes sign around age 5, again around 35, again around 65. If you were born at 2 degrees, the change comes at 28, then 58.
A progressed Sun sign change is a shift in the whole orientation of the life. Progressed Sun moving from Cancer into Leo: a home-and-family person becomes more visible and creative. From Scorpio into Sagittarius: intensity gives way to expansion, travel, teaching. People often describe this as "becoming a different person," and the birth chart hasn't changed at all.
Progressed Sun conjunct a natal planet (which happens once, for about a year) puts that planet at the center of life for that year.
Progressed Mercury, Venus, and Mars
These matter mainly at turning points.
Progressed Mercury turning retrograde or direct: a change in how you think and communicate, often a return to study or a change of intellectual direction.
Progressed Venus changing sign: what you love and value shifts. Progressed Venus retrograde (which happens to some people for a stretch of years) is a period of re-evaluating relationships.
Progressed Mars changing sign or direction: how you assert yourself changes. Progressed Mars turning direct after years retrograde is often when a passive person finally acts.
Progressed Venus or Mars conjunct a natal planet or angle marks a year when love or drive focuses there.
The progressed lunar phase
The progressed Sun and Moon move relative to each other, so the lunar phase you were born under progresses too. The full cycle takes about 29.5 years.
- Progressed New Moon: a new 29-year chapter begins. Often felt as a fresh start, sometimes as a loss that clears the ground.
- Progressed First Quarter (about 7 years later): building, action, crisis of effort.
- Progressed Full Moon (about 14 years after the New): things come to fruition or into full view; a peak, sometimes a confrontation.
- Progressed Last Quarter (about 22 years in): releasing, re-evaluating, dismantling what no longer fits.

Progressions and transits together
Progressions describe inner development; transits describe outer events. The strongest years are when both agree: transiting Saturn conjunct the natal Sun during a progressed Moon in Capricorn is a year of unavoidable seriousness. Transiting Jupiter on the natal Ascendant during a progressed New Moon is a real new beginning.
A transit without a matching progression tends to be an event that passes. A progression without a matching transit tends to be a mood without a trigger. Read both.
