You open your chart and there's a small "Rx" or "R" next to Mercury, or Saturn, or three planets at once. The internet has told you retrogrades are bad. Now you have one permanently.
Relax. A natal retrograde is not a transit. It doesn't mean things go wrong; it means that planet works inward before it works outward. This guide covers what retrograde motion is, why it's common (most charts have at least one), what each retrograde planet tends to look like in a person, and the one thing to check before reading too much into it.
What retrograde motion is
Planets don't reverse. From Earth, though, they appear to: as we overtake an outer planet (or an inner planet overtakes us), it seems to slide backwards against the stars for a while, then resume. It's the same effect as a slower car appearing to move backwards when you pass it.
In the chart, a retrograde planet is marked Rx. Its position is real; only the direction of motion is reversed. The Sun and Moon never go retrograde.
How common natal retrogrades are
More common than people think. At any moment, Mercury is retrograde about 19 percent of the time, Venus 7 percent, Mars 9 percent, Jupiter and Saturn each around 30 to 35 percent, and the three outer planets about 40 percent each. Work that out across ten planets and the majority of charts have one to three retrogrades. A chart with none is the unusual one.
So a retrograde isn't a flaw; it's a common variation, like being left-handed.
The general rule: inward first
A direct planet expresses outward by default: it does the thing, then reflects. A retrograde planet reflects first, then does the thing, and often does it differently from how it was taught.
Three tendencies show up across all retrograde planets:
- Delay. The function develops later than average, sometimes noticeably. The person "catches up" in their late twenties or thirties and often surpasses.
- Privacy. The function is processed internally. Others don't see it working; they see the result.
- Non-standard style. The person doesn't do it the way the textbook says, because they figured it out themselves.
EMercury retrograde in the natal chart
Thinking and communication run inward first. This person often knows what they think long before they can say it, may have been a late talker or a quiet child, and tends to write better than they speak. Rereads, reconsiders, revisits. Frequently very good at editing, research, and any work that rewards a second look.
Not: bad at communication. Often the best writer in the room. Just not the fastest talker.
RVenus retrograde in the natal chart
The rarest of the personal-planet retrogrades. Love and value are processed privately, and the person's taste, in partners and in things, often runs against what their culture rewards. Slow to open up, deeply loyal once open, and sometimes carries a relationship pattern from the past that needs to be consciously reworked. Money can be handled unconventionally too: unusual spending, or strong values about what money is for.
Not: unlovable or unlucky in love. Usually the opposite once they stop trying to want what they're supposed to want.
TMars retrograde in the natal chart
Drive and anger turn inward. This person may not show anger when it happens; it surfaces later, or as tension, or as intense focus on a private goal. Competitive, but with themselves more than with others. Often has to learn to act directly, and once they do, they're relentless because the energy has been banking.
Not: passive. Slow-burn.
YJupiter and USaturn retrograde
These are common enough that the interpretation is lighter.
Jupiter Rx: faith and meaning are personal rather than inherited. The person questions the religion, philosophy, or optimism they were raised with and builds their own. Often less lucky in the conventional sense and more interested in what luck means.
Saturn Rx: authority is internalized. The person may have had an absent, weak, or inconsistent father figure or authority early on, and responds by becoming their own. Very self-disciplined, hard on themselves, and slow to trust external structure. Fear of failing is private and strong.
The outer planets retrograde
IUranus, ONeptune, and PPluto are retrograde about 40 percent of the year each, so their retrograde status is shared by large groups and carries little individual meaning. Read it only if the planet is also angular or tightly aspecting a personal planet, in which case it adds the "inward first" tone to whatever that planet already does.
Three or more retrogrades
A chart with three or more retrograde planets, especially if they include personal planets, belongs to someone who does most of their living on the inside. Reflective, private, often creative, frequently a late bloomer, and rarely understood on first meeting. These charts tend to get better readings from people who know the person well, because the surface gives little away.
The one thing to check
Before you read a retrograde, check whether the planet is also stationary: moving very slowly because it's about to turn. A planet at station is far stronger in the chart than a plain retrograde one, and the "inward first" quality becomes the central theme rather than a footnote. A planet is at station if it turned direction within a day or two of the birth; an ephemeris for the birth month shows this at a glance.

If you have one, read the planet's sign and house as usual, then add the inward-first layer: later, more private, less by the book. If it's a personal planet, that layer is often the most accurate single sentence the chart offers about how you differ from people with the same Sun sign.
