The Part of Fortune is the one lot almost everyone has heard of, usually as a small circle with a cross through it sitting somewhere in a chart with no explanation. It isn't a planet or a point in the sky. It's a calculated degree, built from the positions of the Sun, Moon and Ascendant, and it belongs to a much larger family of calculated points that Hellenistic astrologers called lots (later Arabic-language astrologers called them parts, hence "Part of Fortune").
Lots are easy to compute and easy to misuse. This guide shows the formulas, walks through a full calculation with real degrees, covers the Lot of Spirit and a few others, and explains how to read the result without turning it into a lucky-number gimmick.
What a lot is
A lot takes the distance between two points in the chart and projects it from a third point, usually the Ascendant. The logic is proportional: the lot is to the Ascendant what one planet is to another. If the Moon is 113 degrees ahead of the Sun, the Lot of Fortune is 113 degrees ahead of the Ascendant.
Written as arithmetic, every lot has the form Ascendant + B - A, where the distance measured runs from A to B in zodiacal order. Degrees are counted on a single 360-degree circle, starting at 0 Aries:
- Aries 0-30, Taurus 30-60, Gemini 60-90, Cancer 90-120
- Leo 120-150, Virgo 150-180, Libra 180-210, Scorpio 210-240
- Sagittarius 240-270, Capricorn 270-300, Aquarius 300-330, Pisces 330-360
If the result goes above 360, subtract 360. If it goes below 0, add 360.
The Lot of Fortune: day and night formulas
The Lot of Fortune uses the two lights. Which direction you measure depends on sect, whether the chart is a day chart or a night chart.
- Day chart (Sun above the horizon, in houses 7 through 12): Fortune = Ascendant + Moon - Sun. You measure from the Sun to the Moon.
- Night chart (Sun below the horizon, in houses 1 through 6): Fortune = Ascendant + Sun - Moon. You measure from the Moon to the Sun.
The reversal is the whole point. In a day chart the Sun is the leading light, so the measurement starts from it; at night the Moon leads. Some modern software and some modern astrologers use the day formula for every chart. The Hellenistic sources are clear that the formula reverses at night, and most traditional practitioners follow them.
Worked calculation: a day chart
Take a chart with these positions:
- Ascendant: 15 degrees Scorpio = 210 + 15 = 225
- Sun: 10 degrees Virgo = 150 + 10 = 160
- Moon: 3 degrees Capricorn = 270 + 3 = 273
First, check sect. With Scorpio rising, Virgo falls in the 11th house by whole sign, above the horizon. This is a day chart.
Day formula: Fortune = Ascendant + Moon - Sun = 225 + 273 - 160 = 338.
338 falls in Pisces (330-360), so Fortune is at 338 - 330 = 8 degrees Pisces.
You can check this by distance. The Moon is 113 degrees ahead of the Sun (273 - 160). Count 113 degrees forward from 15 Scorpio: 15 degrees gets you to 0 Sagittarius, 30 more to 0 Capricorn, 30 to 0 Aquarius, 30 to 0 Pisces, and the remaining 8 lands on 8 Pisces. Same answer.
With Scorpio rising, Pisces is the 5th sign, so Fortune falls in the 5th house by whole sign. The traditional ruler of Pisces is Jupiter, so Jupiter becomes the ruler of Fortune, and its condition says a great deal about how the lot works out.
Worked calculation: a night chart
Same Ascendant, different lights:
- Ascendant: 15 degrees Scorpio = 225
- Sun: 10 degrees Aquarius = 300 + 10 = 310
- Moon: 3 degrees Leo = 120 + 3 = 123
Aquarius is the 4th sign from Scorpio, below the horizon, so this is a night chart.
Night formula: Fortune = Ascendant + Sun - Moon = 225 + 310 - 123 = 412. That's over 360, so subtract: 412 - 360 = 52.
52 falls in Taurus (30-60), so Fortune is at 52 - 30 = 22 degrees Taurus, in the 7th house by whole sign, ruled by Venus.
If you had wrongly used the day formula here, you'd get 225 + 123 - 310 = 38, which is 8 degrees Taurus. Same sign in this case by coincidence, but 14 degrees off, and in many charts the error puts Fortune in a different sign and house entirely.
The Lot of Spirit
The Lot of Spirit (sometimes called the Lot of the Daimon) is Fortune's mirror. It uses the same three points, reversed:
- Day: Spirit = Ascendant + Sun - Moon
- Night: Spirit = Ascendant + Moon - Sun
In the day chart above: 225 + 160 - 273 = 112, which is 22 degrees Cancer, in the 9th house from Scorpio, ruled by the Moon.
Fortune and Spirit always fall the same distance on either side of the Ascendant, one ahead and one behind. Hellenistic astrologers treated them as a pair:
- Fortune relates to the Moon: the body, health, material circumstances, what happens to you.
- Spirit relates to the Sun: the mind, intention, action, career, what you choose to do.
Vettius Valens used both as the basis for zodiacal releasing, a timing technique that divides life into periods ruled by the signs, starting from the sign of Fortune (for health and circumstances) or Spirit (for career and action).
Eros and Necessity, briefly
The Hellenistic tradition preserved a set of lots built on Fortune and Spirit, often called the Hermetic lots. Two of them come up regularly. Their formulas vary between authors; the versions below follow Paulus Alexandrinus.
- Lot of Eros (desire, what you want and are drawn to): day = Ascendant + Venus - Spirit; night = Ascendant + Spirit - Venus.
- Lot of Necessity (constraint, what compels you, conflicts): day = Ascendant + Fortune - Mercury; night = Ascendant + Mercury - Fortune.
Other authors give different versions for both, and if you read older texts you'll find variants. Use one version consistently, and test it against charts you know well before relying on it.
Hundreds of other lots exist in later medieval sources: lots of marriage, children, siblings, travel and so on. Most are rarely used today. Fortune and Spirit carry most of the practical weight.
How to read the Lot of Fortune
Treat Fortune as a secondary Ascendant for the body and circumstances. The steps:
- Note the sign and house. Fortune in the 5th house (as in the day example) points to pleasure, children and creative work as areas where circumstances tend to go well, or where much of life's fortune plays out.
- Find the ruler of Fortune and judge its condition. In the day example, Jupiter rules Pisces. If Jupiter is in its own sign, angular, and in good aspect with other planets, the material side of life is well supported. If Jupiter is weak, in its detriment or badly aspected, circumstances are harder to control.
- Check planets in the Fortune sign or aspecting it. A benefic in the same sign as Fortune helps; a malefic there, especially one out of sect, can complicate things.
- Count houses from Fortune. Valens read the 11th sign from Fortune as the place of acquisition, a good indicator of wealth and gains. The 10th sign from Fortune shows career activity. In the day example, the 11th from Pisces is Capricorn, where the Moon sits, so gains are tied to public life and fluctuating circumstances.
Fortune on its own isn't "where you're lucky." It's a point describing the flow of circumstances you don't fully choose. Spirit describes what you do about them.
Common mistakes
- Using the day formula for every chart. Check sect first, every time.
- Reading Fortune without its ruler. The ruler often tells you more than the lot itself.
- Treating Fortune as a planet. It doesn't cast aspects the way planets do; planets aspect it.
- Overweighting the exact degree. Traditional practice reads lots mainly by sign, and a small birth time error moves them along with the Ascendant.
- Adding dozens of lots. More points means more noise. Start with Fortune and Spirit.
