Three times a year, for about three weeks each, Mercury appears to move backwards, and a large part of the internet blames it for everything. Missed trains, broken phones, exes texting. Some of that has an astrological basis. Most of it is a meme that learned to feed itself.
This guide separates the two. What Mercury retrograde is, what the tradition says it affects (which is narrower than the meme), why it hits some people harder than others, the shadow periods, and what to do and not do with the three weeks.
What Mercury retrograde is
Mercury orbits the Sun faster than Earth does. About three times a year it laps us, and during the overtake it appears to reverse direction against the background stars for roughly three weeks. It isn't moving backwards; the view from Earth makes it look that way, the same way a slower car appears to slide backward as you pass it.
Because Mercury is never more than 28 degrees from the Sun, each retrograde happens in the sign the Sun is in or the one next to it. The retrograde stations (the moments it appears to stop and reverse) are the sensitive points: Mercury is nearly motionless at station, and its influence is concentrated.
How often, and how long
Three retrogrades a year, occasionally four. Each lasts about 21 to 24 days. Add the shadow periods before and after and each episode spans roughly eight weeks, which means Mercury is in some phase of its retrograde cycle a third of the year. That fact alone should lower the panic: a third of the year can't be a disaster zone or nothing would ever get done.
What the tradition actually claims
Mercury rules communication, information, movement, trade, and the mind. The traditional claim is that during the retrograde, these functions turn inward and backward: re-viewing, re-visiting, re-considering, re-pairing. Things sent out come back. Things concluded get reopened. Things forgotten resurface.
Specifically, the classical reading warns about:
- Miscommunication: messages misread, meanings missed, the email that was clear to you and not to them.
- Delays in transport and delivery: not because the trains stop, but because the plans around them go sideways.
- Reopening the past: old contacts, old projects, old decisions come back for another look.
- Contracts and purchases: the caution is not "don't," it's "read it twice, because you'll miss something the first time."
That's the list. The tradition doesn't say your phone will break or your car will fail. Those are Mars and Uranus stories that got attached to Mercury because Mercury retrograde has a name people recognize.
Why it hits some people harder
The same retrograde is barely noticed by one person and wrecks another's month. The difference is contact with the natal chart.
- Mercury retrograde in your 3rd, 6th, or 10th house: the communication, work, or career area gets the reprocessing treatment directly.
- The retrograde crossing a natal planet: Mercury stations or passes over your natal Sun, Moon, Mercury, or an angle. This is the version that produces real events: a conversation revisited, a decision reversed, a return of someone from the past.
- Mercury-ruled charts: Gemini or Virgo rising, or a strong natal Mercury. These people feel every Mercury station.
- Natal Mercury retrograde: paradoxically, people born with Mercury retrograde often report the transit as comfortable. The world slows to their speed.
If none of those apply, the retrograde is mostly background noise for you, and any chaos is probably ordinary chaos.
The shadow periods
Before the retrograde starts, Mercury passes through the degrees it will later retrograde over (the pre-shadow). After it turns direct, it re-crosses those same degrees (the post-shadow). Each shadow lasts about two weeks.
Practically: things set in motion during the pre-shadow tend to be the things that get revisited during the retrograde, and the post-shadow is when they finally resolve. If a plan made in the pre-shadow falls apart in the retrograde and comes back together in the post-shadow, that's the cycle working as described.
Retrograde by sign and house
The sign colors the retrograde's style. Retrograde in an air sign (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius): the confusion is about words and ideas. In earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn): about plans, money, logistics. In fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius): about impulsive statements and hasty decisions. In water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces): about feelings misread and things left unsaid.
The house it transits in your chart names the area. Retrograde in your 7th: relationship conversations get replayed; an ex may reappear. In your 2nd: money matters need re-checking; a refund, a re-bill, a purchase reconsidered. In your 9th: travel plans change; a course of study revisited.
What to do, what to avoid, what to ignore
Do: the re- verbs. Review, revise, reconsider, reconnect, repair, rest. Edit the thing you wrote. Follow up on the conversation that didn't land. Finish the project you abandoned. Back up your files, which is always good advice and gets remembered now.
Be careful with: signing things you haven't read closely, sending the angry email, assuming the message was received, booking travel without confirmation. Not "don't," just "double-check."
Ignore: the idea that nothing should start. Life doesn't pause for three weeks, three times a year. Plenty of things begun during Mercury retrograde work out fine, especially things that are themselves a return or a revision. A second attempt at something is right at home in a retrograde.
Also ignore: blaming Mercury for things that are Mars (accidents, anger), Uranus (sudden breakage), Neptune (confusion with no clear cause), or ordinary human error. The retrograde is a real pattern; it isn't a universal excuse.

Check the current retrograde against your chart
Open the transit tool โ and set the date to the current retrograde period. Look for transiting Mercury's house in your chart and whether its station degrees fall within a few degrees of any natal planet or angle. If they do, that's where the three weeks will be felt. If they don't, go about your business and read the email twice.
Mercury retrograde is one of astrology's most testable claims. Track three of them against your own chart and calendar, and you'll know what it does for you, which is more useful than what it supposedly does for everyone.
