Saturn gets the attention: the return at 29 is famous. Jupiter's return is quieter and comes more often, every 12 years, and it marks something the Saturn return doesn't: the beginning of a new chapter of growth. At 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, 72, and 84, Jupiter comes back to where it was when you were born, and the question changes from "what do I have to do" to "where do I get to go."

The 12-year cycle
YJupiter takes just under 12 years to orbit the Sun, so it spends about a year in each sign and returns to its natal position at roughly the same age for everyone: 11 to 12, 23 to 24, 35 to 36, 47 to 48, 59 to 60, 71 to 72, 83 to 84.
Because Jupiter goes retrograde, most returns involve three passes over the natal degree across several months. The whole episode, from first pass to last, spans most of a year.
In Chinese astrology, the 12-year animal cycle is the Jupiter cycle: Jupiter's year-per-sign motion is the original basis for the twelve-year count. So "your year" in the Chinese sense and your Jupiter return are the same event, described in two systems.
What a Jupiter return feels like
Jupiter is expansion, opportunity, faith, and the sense that more is possible. A Jupiter return usually brings some of: a door opening, a bigger role, travel or study, a renewed optimism, a philosophical or religious re-orientation, and sometimes weight gain or overspending, because Jupiter doesn't distinguish between good expansion and just more.
It's not always a windfall. The return is a reset of the growth cycle: what you believe is possible gets updated, and the next 12 years grow from that update. People often describe it in hindsight as "the year I decided to go for it."
The returns by age
Age 12: the first return. Leaving childhood; the world gets bigger. Often coincides with a change of school or a first real sense of ambition.
Age 24: the first adult return. Education complete or abandoned, the first real move into the world. For many people the start of the career or the big relocation. Sits just before the Saturn return at 29 and sets up what Saturn will test.
Age 36: the mid-thirties return. Usually a step up: a bigger job, a house, a family expansion, a commitment to a direction. Coincides with the nodal return at 37 and the first Saturn square after the return, so it's a busy stretch.
Age 48: the late-forties return. Comes after the midlife transits (Uranus opposition at 42, Neptune square, Chiron return at 50), often as the recovery: a new sense of purpose, a second career, a return to study or travel. This is the return people most often describe as "finally."
Age 60: just after the second Saturn return at 58 to 59. Retirement or reinvention; expansion into a new life phase. Often marked by travel, grandchildren, teaching, or a long-postponed pursuit.
Age 72 and 84: wisdom returns. Growth in meaning rather than territory. The 84 return coincides with the Uranus return: a full cycle of the life completed.
Jupiter's house: where you grow
The house of your natal Jupiter is where the return happens, and it's the area of life where growth comes most naturally and where the return brings its opportunities.
- 1st: you grow personally: confidence, presence, sometimes size. Returns bring a bigger self.
- 2nd: money and resources. Returns often bring income growth, and spending to match.
- 3rd: learning, communication, siblings, the local world. Returns bring study, writing, a wider circle.
- 4th: home and family. Returns bring a bigger home, a family expansion, or a deeper sense of belonging.
- 5th: creativity, romance, children. Returns bring a creative project, a love, a child.
- 6th: work and health. Returns bring more work (sometimes too much) and improved conditions.
- 7th: partnership. Returns bring a significant relationship or the deepening of one; also generous partners.
- 8th: shared resources, transformation. Returns bring inheritance, investment gains, or a profound personal change.
- 9th: Jupiter's own house. Travel, higher education, publishing, faith. Returns bring the big trip, the degree, the book.
- 10th: career and public standing. Returns bring promotion, recognition, a larger role.
- 11th: friends, groups, goals. Returns bring a wider network, a cause, a goal achieved.
- 12th: the inner life, retreat, service. Returns bring spiritual growth, a period of productive solitude, or help from unseen sources.
The Jupiter opposition at the half-cycle
Six years after each return, transiting Jupiter is opposite its natal position: around 6, 18, 30, 42, 54, 66, 78. The opposition is the culmination of the cycle that began at the return: what was started at 24 comes to fruition or confrontation at 30.
Jupiter oppositions are often years of overreach: the growth has been going for six years and now meets a limit, usually in the form of another person or an external circumstance that says "enough." The 30 and 42 oppositions coincide with the Saturn return and the Uranus opposition respectively, which is part of why those ages are so loud.
The trap: luck without effort
Jupiter's reputation for luck is the most misleading thing about it. The return opens doors; it doesn't walk through them. People who wait for the Jupiter return to deliver often report that "nothing happened," and what they mean is that they didn't do anything with the opening.
The productive way to use a return: decide in advance what growth you want, and in the return year, say yes to things you'd normally decline. Jupiter rewards the yes. It punishes the yes-to-everything with excess, so the trick is a yes with a direction.
Jupiter transits between returns
The return is the biggest Jupiter event but not the only one. Every year Jupiter moves through a new house of your chart, bringing that house a year of expansion, and every year it aspects several natal planets.
Jupiter through your 10th house (any year): a good career year. Jupiter conjunct natal Venus: a romantic or financially pleasant few weeks. Jupiter square natal Saturn: ambition against limits, the year you find out how much you can actually take on.
