Chiron is the small body between Saturn and Uranus that astrologers picked up in the late 1970s and haven't put down since. The nickname, "the wounded healer," is accurate but incomplete. In practice, Chiron marks a place where something went wrong early, didn't fully heal, and turned into a skill for helping others with the same thing. It's the injury and the expertise in one placement.

What Chiron is
Astronomically, Chiron is a centaur: an icy body on an eccentric 50-year orbit that crosses Saturn's and approaches Uranus's. Discovered in 1977. Named after the centaur in Greek myth who was a teacher of heroes and a healer, and who was wounded by a poisoned arrow he couldn't cure in himself.
The orbit is the clue to the meaning. Saturn is structure and limits; Uranus is disruption and freedom. Chiron travels between them, and its themes sit there too: the wound is where structure failed (Saturn), and the healing is unconventional (Uranus).
Because the orbit is eccentric, Chiron spends about 8 years in Aries and Pisces but under 2 years in Libra and Virgo. Its sign is partly generational; its house and aspects are personal.
The pattern: wound, then skill
Chiron's placement points at something that hurt early, usually in childhood, usually in a way that wasn't anyone's fault exactly, and usually in an area where the person felt different or inadequate. The wound doesn't fully close. Instead the person becomes unusually good at recognizing that same wound in others, and helping with it, while still carrying their own.
The therapist who's still anxious. The teacher who never felt smart. The relationship coach who's on their third marriage. Not hypocrisy: Chiron.
The reading is always in two parts: name the wound, then name the skill it produced.
Chiron by house
House is the more concrete layer because it names the area of life.
- 1st house: the wound is about the self and the body: feeling wrong, ugly, or out of place. Skill: helping others accept themselves.
- 2nd: worth and money. Felt poor or valueless early. Skill: helping others find their value.
- 3rd: speech, learning, siblings. A learning difference, a speech issue, or a sibling who overshadowed. Skill: teaching, explaining, writing for people who struggle.
- 4th: home and family. Something missing or broken at home. Skill: making a home for others; often a deep understanding of family systems.
- 5th: creativity, play, children. Felt talentless or unseen. Skill: drawing out creativity in others.
- 6th: work and health. Chronic health or a feeling of being useless. Skill: healing, service, health work.
- 7th: partnership. Rejected, or the parents' marriage was the model of what not to do. Skill: counseling others in relationships.
- 8th: intimacy, loss, shared resources. An early loss or betrayal. Skill: sitting with people in crisis.
- 9th: belief and education. Faith broken, or made to feel stupid. Skill: teaching and mentoring at the level of meaning.
- 10th: career and public standing. Shamed publicly, or a parent's failure was public. Skill: mentoring careers, often a late and unusual success.
- 11th: belonging. The outsider in every group. Skill: building groups for outsiders.
- 12th: the unseen and the unconscious. A diffuse wound, hard to name, often inherited. Skill: spiritual and psychological depth.
Chiron by sign
Sign adds the style of the wound.
- Aries: wounded in the right to exist and act. Heals by daring.
- Taurus: wounded in the body and in security. Heals by building.
- Gemini: wounded in communication. Heals by finding words.
- Cancer: wounded in belonging and nurture. Heals by nurturing.
- Leo: wounded in self-expression and being seen. Heals by creating.
- Virgo: wounded in competence and health. Heals by service.
- Libra: wounded in relationship and fairness. Heals by partnering well.
- Scorpio: wounded by betrayal or loss. Heals by going through it.
- Sagittarius: wounded in faith and meaning. Heals by teaching.
- Capricorn: wounded in authority and achievement. Heals by earning it.
- Aquarius: wounded in belonging to the group. Heals by building a new one.
- Pisces: wounded in boundaries and trust. Heals by compassion with limits.

Chiron in aspect
Chiron conjunct or in hard aspect to a personal planet makes that planet a site of the wound.
- Chiron-Sun: identity itself feels wounded; often a father theme. Skill: helping others find who they are.
- Chiron-Moon: emotional needs went unmet; often a mother theme. Skill: emotional attunement to others.
- Chiron-Mercury: wounded in thinking or speaking. Skill: unusually clear communication once it's worked through.
- Chiron-Venus: wounded in love and worth. Skill: understanding relationship pain in others.
- Chiron-Mars: wounded in assertion or the body. Skill: working with anger and physical healing.
- Chiron on the Ascendant: the wound is visible; the person carries it in how they come across. Often the healer identity is the public face.
- Chiron on the Midheaven: the healing skill becomes the career.
Trines and sextiles to Chiron are gentler: the skill is available without as much of the wound.
The Chiron return at 50
Chiron takes about 50 years to orbit, so everyone gets one Chiron return, around age 49 to 51. The wound comes back up, often through a concrete event that rhymes with the original. It's the last of the mid-life transits (after the Uranus opposition at 42 and the second Saturn return approaching at 58), and it's the one where the person either makes peace with the old injury or spends the next decade carrying it more heavily.
In practice, people report that the 50th year brings up an old theme they thought was finished. That's the return. The productive response is to treat the wound as the qualification it has become, rather than as the flaw it started as.
The Chiron opposition around age 25 and the squares around 12 to 14 and 36 to 38 (irregular because of the eccentric orbit) are smaller activations of the same theme.
What Chiron is not
Not a planet, and not part of traditional astrology, which means the interpretation is less than 50 years old and still settling. Some astrologers give it central importance; some ignore it. A reasonable middle: read it when it's angular, tightly aspecting a personal planet, or in a house that matches a known life theme. Otherwise, let it be background.
And it's not a death sentence. The wound is real; so is the skill. Most people with a strong Chiron are the ones others go to when something hurts.
