10th, 6th, and 2nd house: career and money in the birth chart

"What does my chart say about my career?" usually gets answered with the Midheaven sign, which is a start and not much more. Career in a chart is three houses working together: the 10th (what you're known for), the 6th (the daily work that gets you there), and the 2nd (what you earn and what you value). Most career frustration comes from one of the three being strong and another being ignored.

This guide covers what each house governs, what planets in each one do, what an empty house means, and how to read the three as a system. Then the same for money, which lives mostly in the 2nd and 8th.

Three houses, one career

The 10th is the summit: the role, the title, the thing strangers know you for. The 6th is the trail: the job, the routine, the skills, the colleagues, the health you need to keep going. The 2nd is the supplies: money, possessions, and the sense of your own worth that decides what you'll charge.

A strong 10th with a weak 6th is ambition without a work ethic, or a public role that the daily grind can't support. A strong 6th with a weak 10th is the excellent employee who never gets the title. A strong 2nd with both others weak is someone who's good with money and has no particular career direction, which is a perfectly fine way to live.

The 10th house: reputation and the public role

Ruled naturally by Capricorn and Saturn. The Midheaven (MC), the 10th cusp, is the highest point of the chart: what you're reaching for and what you're seen doing. It also describes authority figures, often one parent, and how you relate to bosses and institutions.

The sign on the MC gives the style of the public role. Leo MC: known for warmth and visibility, performance, leadership. Virgo MC: known for skill and precision, service, expertise. Scorpio MC: known for depth, research, crisis work, or an air of mystery. Aquarius MC: known for originality, technology, causes.

The 6th house: the daily work

Ruled naturally by Virgo and Mercury. Work in the sense of labor, not status. Routine, skills, employees and colleagues, the working conditions, and health, because in the traditional view your body is the first thing you work with.

The 6th is where you're useful. It often describes the actual job better than the 10th does: someone with a Leo MC (public role: performer) and a Capricorn 6th (daily work: structured, slow, administrative) may be the theater producer, not the actor.

The 2nd house: income and values

Ruled naturally by Taurus and Venus. Money you earn, things you own, and the values underneath both: what you think is worth paying for, what you'd never sell, what you think you're worth. The 2nd also holds self-esteem, because self-worth and net worth run on the same house.

Sign on the 2nd: Aries, earns fast and spends fast, values independence. Taurus, earns steadily and holds, values security. Gemini, several income streams, values information. Capricorn, earns slowly and builds, values status and durability. Pisces, money is confusing and generous, values meaning over cash.

Planets in the 10th

• Sun: identity through career; needs to be visible and respected. Often a leader or public figure in their field.
• Moon: a public that responds emotionally; work in caring, food, housing, or with the public directly. Career may change with the mood.
• Mercury: known for communication; writing, teaching, sales, media.
• Venus: known for charm, beauty, diplomacy; careers in art, design, relationships, luxury. Career comes through being liked.
• Mars: ambitious, competitive, public conflict; careers in sport, military, surgery, engineering, or any field where you fight for position.
• Jupiter: big career, growth, a lucky break; law, education, publishing, travel. Risk of overreach.
• Saturn: the slow climb to real authority; late success that lasts. The classic placement for people who become the institution.
• Uranus: unconventional career, sudden changes, technology, reform. Not a job for life.
• Neptune: ambiguous public image; careers in film, music, spirituality, healing, or a career that never quite comes into focus.
• Pluto: power and transformation in public; careers in psychology, finance, crisis, research. A reputation that goes through a death and rebirth.

Planets in the 6th

• Sun: identity through being useful; needs work to feel alive. Often health-conscious.
• Moon: emotional need for routine; caretaking work; health tied to mood.
• Mercury: analytical work; detail, writing, systems, healthcare.
• Venus: pleasant workplace matters; work in beauty, service, art applied to daily life. Romance at work.
• Mars: works hard, competitive with colleagues; energy or conflict on the job; risk of overwork and injury.
• Jupiter: good working conditions, generous employers, sometimes too much work. Health generally robust.
• Saturn: heavy work, responsibility, chronic health themes; learns to work within limits and becomes very good at it.
• Uranus: irregular work, freelance, technology, sudden job changes.
• Neptune: confusion at work, service without recognition, or work in healing and the arts. Health that's hard to diagnose.
• Pluto: intense work, power struggles with colleagues, transformation through the daily grind.

Planets in the 2nd

• Sun: identity through earning and owning; self-worth tied to income.
• Moon: fluctuating income; emotional security through money and possessions.
• Mercury: income through communication, trade, multiple streams.
• Venus: the classic money placement: earns through beauty, charm, or art; spends on pleasure; often comfortable.
• Mars: earns aggressively, spends impulsively; income through competition or physical work.
• Jupiter: money comes, often more than expected, and goes. Generous, optimistic about finances, occasionally reckless.
• Saturn: fears poverty, saves, builds slowly; often starts poor and ends secure. Learns worth the hard way.
• Uranus: erratic income, unusual sources, sudden gains and losses.
• Neptune: money is vague; generosity, confusion, or income through art and imagination. Watch for being taken advantage of.
• Pluto: intense relationship with money; large gains or losses; earns through transformation, research, or other people's crises.

Empty houses and their rulers

Most people have at least one of these three houses empty. That's normal. The house runs on its ruler.

Find the sign on the cusp, find its ruling planet, and read where that planet sits. Empty 10th with Gemini on the MC: Mercury rules the career. Mercury in the 3rd: the career is in communication, local, teaching, trade. Mercury in the 9th: publishing, higher education, travel, foreign connections.

The ruler's condition also matters. A 10th ruler in a tight square to Saturn: the career comes with obstacles and delays. A 2nd ruler trine Jupiter: money comes more easily than the person expects.

Reading the three together

Compare the three houses by planets present, rulers' strength, and aspects.

• 10th strong, 6th weak: ambitious, may skip the skill-building; needs a partner or team that handles the daily work.
• 6th strong, 10th weak: excellent worker, undervalued; needs to consciously claim the public role.
• 2nd strong, 10th and 6th weak: financially able without a career identity; often self-employed or an investor.
• All three connected by aspect (rulers aspecting each other, or planets across the houses in aspect): a coherent career where the work, the role, and the money support each other.

Then look at the MC ruler's house, which often names the field, and at any planet on the MC itself, which names the reputation.

The 8th house and other people's money

The 2nd is your money. The 8th is shared money: partner's income, joint accounts, loans, inheritance, taxes, insurance, investments. A strong 8th and weak 2nd belongs to someone who does better with other people's resources than their own: a fund manager, a spouse who handles the finances, someone who inherits.

The 2nd-8th axis, like all axes, works as a pair. Planets in one square the ruler of the other are the classic signature of money conflicts in partnership.

Check your chart

Open the birth chart tool → and look at the 2nd, 6th, and 10th: the sign on each cusp, planets inside, and where each ruler sits. The house table lists all three, and the MC is marked at the top of the wheel.

Then do what the chart can't: compare it to your actual work history. If the chart says strong 6th and weak 10th and you've been the reliable one who watched others get promoted, that isn't bad luck. It's a placement, and knowing it changes what you ask for.
